Apps and Gadgets part 2

Hola!

Last week I told you the apps I downloaded. Today, I thought I share my accessories. I'm a woman, I love accessories.

1. I have a smart cover. It's pretty cool. It's magnetic so I can't lose it ... major plus. When I close it, it turns off my iPad, so I save my battery ... another major plus. It's thin and flexible, so I can fold it any way I want to create the perfect stand, whenever I need one ... anything you can play with is a plus. $40

2. I have a wireless keyboard. LOVE it! I ordered mine when I ordered my iPad so I got it from Apple. I paid $69, you may be able to get it cheaper, but mine is awesome so, I'm not complaining...

3. - 4.  Apple Composite AV Cable $39 and VGA Adapter $29. After I ordered my iPad, I began hearing horror stories about iPad and connecting to monitors, smartboards, and such. I used my Composite AV Cable to connect to our smartboard and it worked just fine. I couldn't have been happier. I shared a video podcast with my students. We were pleased. I haven't used my VGA Adapter, but as soon as I do, I'll let you know.

My next purchase will be a wireless mouse.

Ciao,
Shellie

Apps and Gadgets part 1

I've been playing with my iPad now for a few weeks now and I STILL love it!!

Here are a few of the Apps I bought to make my iPad experience simply amazing...

1.Since I'm organizationally challenged, I purchased Todo for iPad by Appigo. It was well worth $4.99! I love it. It was easy for me to set up, easy for me to follow and it keeps me on task. I can plug in tasks for my classes, for my administrative duties, for my art work, for my personal health and for everything else I need to do. I set several reminders and it's such a cool feeling to be able to check something off as completed BEFORE my boss asks me about it.

2. I also downloaded Dropbox for iPad by Dropbox. It's FREE!! I know that I may be the only person in the world that loses or misplaces my jump drives. I have files on my work computer, my laptop,  my home computer, and several jump-drives wherever they may be. With Dropbox all of my things are in one place. I downloaded Dropbox on all of my computers and my iPad. It's so easy. I type an assignment, I save it and drag it to Dropbox. Once it's in Dropbox I can access it, update it, or do whatever I need no matter where I am or no matter what I'm using! FABULOUS!!

3. Lesson Plans... hate them. I wanted a place to put all of my lesson plans, so that I can tweak them as needed or show them to that "auditor" whenever they may appear. I'm trying to get rid of the binders. I have handwritten lesson plans, but I wanted to go digital this year... this is going to be my GREEN year! I spent $2.99 on My LessonPlan by ZappityApps.com. It's more geared for K-12 educators, BUT the format is so basic and contains everything I need, that even at the community college level it works. I only have 2 classes this summer so the real test will come this fall when my class load quadruples! :)

4. This app has nothing to do with school... this app is to help me keep track of my finances. I downloaded Pageonce! I started with the free version and enjoyed it so much that I upgraded to the Pro version. I love getting reminders when bills are due. I can see every detail about my money, how I spend it, when I spend it, and where I spend it. Pageonce notifies me when my accounts are credited so I know when my bills have been paid. It's AWESOME...

I'm sure as the summer progresses, I'll be exploring more apps and when I find one I like... I'll share!

Shellie

Introducing Me and my iPad.....

I'm so excited about my new iPad! I'm hoping I can accomplish some things that I was struggling to accomplish previously.

Here's some background info...

Hi, I'm Shellie. I'm the Department Chair for the Community Spanish Interpreter Program at Sampson Community College in Clinton, North Carolina. I'm also the only person in my department, which means I'm responsible for not only designing the classes in my program, but I have to teach them too.

Organization has NEVER been my forte, so I thought maybe if I had an iPad it could help me.

Hopefully, my iPad will help me with:

1. Organization, part 1: Keep all of my notes, all of my presentations, and movies for all of my classes in one place. Right now I have things on 2 jump drives (I tend to misplace them or wash them or both), on my laptop (which currently has a virus), and on my desk top (which has been at SCC longer than me...just saying).

2. Organization, part 2: My program has been in existence 3 yrs., so like me it's fairly new. I've so many responsibilities, administrative duties and deadlines that pertain to the program alone...did I mention that organization is not my thing... I thought wouldn't be nice if I could have my calendar with me and IT remind me of all the things that I need to do... before my boss!

3. Blogging: One advantage of having a scattered brain is that amazing things pop in my head at very random times, the flip side of that is that when I get into the classroom that information is usually long gone. Now with my iPad, I'll be able to blog on the go!

4. Emailing from something a little bigger than my phone: A definite plus, no comments needed about my age.

5. Podcasting: I've always wanted to podcast my classes for students who can't make it or who just need to listen again to classroom discussions or lessons. Honestly, I didn't want to carry the camera, the tripod, the microphone or anything else I had to do to get it done. With my iPad, I'm hoping I can press record and go from there!

6. Go Green: It would be so nice to NOT print off notes and just use my iPad in class... no binders, no stacks of paper... imagine the TREES!

I'm sure there are a lot more ways that I can use my iPad in my classroom and in my office to help me reach my goals and obtain even more. As I learn my iPad and find ways to improve my productivity... I'll share with you!

Namaste,
MLMoore
